• Provenance/Details: This mid-19th century neapolitan lava cameo, signed perotti, graveur de lave, rue s. lucia 88, naples, presents the allegorical figure of la speranza (hope), shown seated with an anchor and gazing toward a star. rooted in both classical and christian tradition, this imagery symbolizes steadfastness and the promise of divine guidance, making hope one of the most enduring virtues represented in art. carved from volcanic lava sourced around mount vesuvius, the work embodies a practice unique to naples, where local artisans transformed the stone of their landscape into objects of refinement and meaning. perotti was among the most active engravers in naples during the 19th century, producing finely executed allegorical and mythological cameos that appealed to grand tour travelers and an international clientele. by uniting timeless symbolism with the distinct materials and craftsmanship of naples, this cameo captures both the moral ideals and cosmopolitan spirit of its age. front: • the cameo is carved in lava stone (a specialty of naples in the 18th–19th centuries). • it depicts a classical allegorical female figure, robed, seated on rocks, with anchors at her side, gazing upwards at a star. o this figure represents “la speranza” (hope) — the anchor and star are traditional symbols of hope. back: • inscription reads: o la speranza o perotti, graveur de lave, rue s. lucie, n° 88 naples → identifies the artist as perotti, a known engraver of lava cameos working in naples.
