About the Designer

A LIFE DEVOTED TO PURE GOLD AND ANCIENT GOLDSMITHING

Destiny doesn't always announce itself. Sometimes it arrives in your hands a single sheet of gold, pure and impossibly warm, humming with millennia of history. When Gurhan Orhan touched 24-karat gold for the first time in Istanbul in 1994, something ancient stirred. The decision was instant. He would master what others called impossible.

WHEN A VISION BECOMES DESTINY

Gurhan has always been creative with his hands. Before becoming a jewelry designer, he lived in Switzerland, restoring antique pocket watches and remaking them into wrist watches as objets d'art. His attention to detail was evident in every creation, and the watches were displayed at exhibitions. Prior to that, he pursued another passion: music building systems and entertainment venues to bring U.S. and U.K. rock to Turkey.

Decades later, someone placed a sheet of pure 24K gold in Gurhan's hands. The warmth flooded through him. The sensuality of the gold spoke in a language older than words. In that crystallized moment, his vocation revealed itself. He would create fine jewelry using this material that everyone said couldn't be tamed. With that commitment burning in his chest, he began his revolution.

The critiques came immediately. Local artisans scoffed. “Too soft,” they said. “Too heavy.” “The material would betray you.” Gurhan listened, then locked himself in a tiny workshop tucked deep in the Grand Bazaar's labyrinth. There, surrounded by centuries of commerce and craft, he rejected every modern teaching. Instead, he reached backward through time to study the original techniques of goldsmiths from millennia ago. He studied how ancient hands had shaped this very metal into treasures that survived empires. In his own words, he "reincarnated" the ancients, bringing their forgotten craft back to the world.

The breakthrough came. The World Gold Council recognized what he had achieved, awarding him the Grand Prize for Design for the New Millennium for his revolutionary spring bracelet. That piece became an iconic GURHAN design, so essential it continues to be reborn in new forms, each one carrying the DNA of that first impossible creation.
His singular vision soon escaped the confines of the jewelry world.

Discovery Channel's "Gold Rush" came calling, bringing cameras into his workshop to document something rare, a craftsman reviving techniques the modern world had abandoned. The feature revealed what drives each creation: not trends or market demands, but an almost spiritual connection to high-karat gold and the ancient hands that first understood its secrets.

He was commissioned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to create a jewelry collection for a special exhibition. Over the years, Gurhan's designs have been treasured and worn by distinguished royalty and celebrated figures worldwide.

Art institutions and media celebrated what he'd created. But the most profound recognition came from women who understood what his jewelry truly meant.

WORN BY WOMEN WHO SHAPE HISTORY

Former First Lady and Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton chose a round pair of Amulet earrings, wearing them to the Democratic Convention. First Lady Laura Bush selected a square pair, adorning herself with them for The Tonight Show and the Republican Convention. These weren't fashion statements. They were declarations, powerful women drawn to jewelry that refuses to follow convention.

When Angelina Jolie appeared on the cover of National Jeweler wearing GURHAN, the image became legendary. Not because of celebrity, but because it captured something true: the way distinctive design finds the women meant to wear it. Recognition opened doors, but Gurhan walked through them on his own terms. He expanded beyond pure gold and pure platinum, introducing a pure silver line that echoed his signature aesthetic. The market, hungry for something different, embraced it immediately. Even during an economic crisis, the collection thrived.

In 2009, the jewelry world could no longer ignore what Gurhan had accomplished. The industry recognized Gurhan as the pioneer in pure gold in modern jewelry by awarding him the prize as the "Best in Gold" for the Retailers' Choice Awards presented by JQ Magazine. Retailers across the United States voted, recognizing both GURHAN as a brand and Gurhan himself as a designer who changed what was possible.

WHERE ARTISTRY LIVES

In 2014, the GURHAN Atelier opened its doors in Tribeca, New York City. This was no ordinary store. Workshop and showroom fused together, allowing customers to stand at the threshold between vision and creation. Here, customers find Gurhan himself at the bench, hands moving with ancient rhythm, transforming gold from metal into meaning. Every design created in this space carries that energy, the presence of hands at work, honoring craft.

The High Jewelry Collection arrived as the next expression. Hand-selected precious gemstones met the richness of 24K gold in designs that balanced timeless elegance with bold refinement. Each piece demanded more from Gurhan's hands, gemstones selected for their stories, gold hammered until it sang, bezels refined to the point where jewelry crosses into art.

In 2024, the men's jewelry line expanded with new designs in sterling silver. Inspired by art and history, each one-of-a-kind piece marked a new chapter in GURHAN's journey. That same year, the brand began cutting select gemstones at the Istanbul atelier, a milestone that deepened the craft. Now, even the gemstones themselves are shaped by the same artisanal hands, cut and polished to their destiny before ever touching gold.

THE JOURNEY CONTINUES

Nearly three decades have passed since Gurhan revolutionized jewelry with pure gold. The journey hasn't softened. The brand now prepares to unveil future collections featuring gemstones cut and polished entirely within the atelier. This deepened control over every element, from raw gemstone to finished treasure, pushes the boundaries of what's possible. Innovation and timeless elegance continue to intertwine. The future gleams bright, and the journey of mastery continues.

Take a journey through the inspirations, the obsessions, and the extraordinary creations that are GURHAN. This is not jewelry born of trends or fleeting moments. Each design carries its own lineage. The gemstones hold mysteries. The artisans shape gold with reverence. The designer travels dusty markets and mountain paths, still searching for what calls to him. Gurhan believes every creation has a destiny, a woman it's meant to find.

And perhaps, somewhere in this collection, one is waiting for you.
