• Provenance/Details: John neumann was born on march 28, 1811, in prachatice, bohemia (modern-day czech republic). he was baptized as jan nepomuk neumann and grew up in a devout catholic family. after completing his education in bohemia, neumann felt called to the priesthood and entered the seminary. he was ordained a priest on june 25, 1836, in new york city. in 1852, john neumann was appointed as the fourth bishop of philadelphia, a role he initially resisted but eventually accepted. he was the first redemptorist to become a bishop in the united states.
