• Provenance/Details: A hobo nickel is a u.s. buffalo five-cent coin (minted between 1913 and 1938) that has been artistically hand-carved into a unique piece of folk art. originally created by traveling workers during the great depression, this craft later evolved into a respected form of coin engraving embraced by modern artists. in this example, the coin’s original portrait has been transformed into a skull wearing a hat, a popular motif in contemporary hobo nickel art. such “skull” designs often symbolize the transience of life while showcasing the creativity and detailed craftsmanship that define this distinctive art form.
