The ruby is one of the most highly valued of all gems. Rubies are associated with love, anger, passion, danger, and romance. Ancient Hindus referred to it as "the king of gems," and royalty used ruby to ward off evil because it was believed to have magical powers. One such magical power was that the ruby would get darker in the presence of evil and lighter when the evil was gone—but only if possessed by its rightful owner.
Not surprisingly, ruby symbolism and lore have many associations with power, wealth, and their protection. Possessing a ruby purportedly benefited and protected the owner’s estates and assisted in the accumulation of wealth. When worn as a talisman, ruby’s mystical properties extended to personal protection. People believed wearing the stone on the left, the heart side, would allow the bearer to live peacefully. None could take their land or rank. The blood-colored stone would preserve them from all perils, even their homes from storms.
Rubies can range in color from pale pink to the deepest possible red, known as "pigeon blood." Gurhan uses rubies in all colors and in an array of unusual cuts including cabochons, faceted, rosecut, briolettes and beads.
